WEBVTT 00:18.159 --> 00:19.159 I . 03:06.100 --> 03:09.360 Steadfast noon is our annual lively 03:09.360 --> 03:11.360 exercise this year . It includes 14 03:11.360 --> 03:13.193 different nations flying over 70 03:13.193 --> 03:15.138 different aircraft in a variety of 03:15.138 --> 03:17.249 different roles . Steadfast Noon is a 03:17.249 --> 03:19.304 nuclear deterrence exercise , but no 03:19.304 --> 03:21.082 nuclear weapons will be used or 03:21.082 --> 03:23.193 exercised with during this exercise . 03:23.193 --> 03:25.416 That sounds interesting and different , 03:25.416 --> 03:27.304 but it is about demonstrating the 03:27.304 --> 03:29.360 capabilities of the aircraft and the 03:29.360 --> 03:31.582 people maintaining them . Steadfast new 03:31.582 --> 03:33.527 is a routine exercise and is not . 03:33.527 --> 03:35.638 against any one nation . However , we 03:35.638 --> 03:37.638 do look at the real threats that we 03:37.638 --> 03:39.860 would face . Part of those are emerging 03:39.860 --> 03:41.916 and disruptive technologies , and we 03:41.916 --> 03:44.027 package and mission plan around those 03:44.027 --> 03:43.839 to provide the biggest operation that 03:43.839 --> 03:45.783 we can to address those real world 03:45.783 --> 03:48.190 threats . Steadfast noon 2025 this year , 03:48.289 --> 03:50.345 uh , we have the F-35 performing the 03:50.345 --> 03:52.345 role from uh Vocal Air Force Base . 03:52.345 --> 03:54.456 This is the first year where the F-35 03:54.456 --> 03:56.567 is going to be leading this mission , 03:56.567 --> 03:58.289 uh , in a variety of different 03:58.289 --> 04:00.400 capabilities , but primarily in the . 04:00.400 --> 04:02.511 Insteadfast noon we exercise aircraft 04:02.511 --> 04:04.567 in a variety of different roles that 04:04.567 --> 04:06.622 includes the strike aircraft and the 04:06.622 --> 04:06.470 strike package that gets over the 04:06.470 --> 04:08.526 target , but to get to the target we 04:08.526 --> 04:10.248 have to have other aircraft in 04:10.248 --> 04:12.303 supporting roles to get there . That 04:12.303 --> 04:14.470 includes tanker aircraft , command and 04:14.470 --> 04:16.470 control aircraft , and other strike 04:16.470 --> 04:18.692 aircraft to protect the aircraft to get 04:18.692 --> 04:20.470 to the target . Part of what we 04:20.470 --> 04:22.581 exercise during Steadfast noon is the 04:22.581 --> 04:24.581 command and control aspects that it 04:24.581 --> 04:26.803 takes to pull off this operation . That 04:26.803 --> 04:28.970 includes weeks of mission planning and 04:28.970 --> 04:30.692 getting ready to conduct these 04:30.692 --> 04:32.526 exercises with uh all the assets 04:32.526 --> 04:34.470 involved . Nuclear deterrence is a 04:34.470 --> 04:36.414 mission that the alliance has long 04:36.414 --> 04:38.526 performed . One of the things that is 04:38.526 --> 04:40.692 new this year that we're looking at is 04:40.692 --> 04:42.859 emerging and disruptive technologies , 04:42.859 --> 04:42.799 particularly the drone threat . We've 04:42.799 --> 04:44.632 seen that during Eastern century 04:44.632 --> 04:46.632 activities , uh , and we've seen it 04:46.632 --> 04:48.577 here , particularly with the Dutch 04:48.577 --> 04:50.799 F-35s performing both of those missions 04:50.799 --> 04:53.021 at the same time . The nuclear planning 04:53.021 --> 04:54.910 group is the decision making body 04:54.910 --> 04:57.077 within the alliance for all operations 04:57.077 --> 04:56.709 that would be conducted with nuclear 04:56.709 --> 04:59.750 weapons . We at SAA take that guidance 04:59.750 --> 05:01.639 and conduct the military planning 05:01.639 --> 05:03.861 necessary to conduct those operations . 05:03.861 --> 05:06.510 Since 1949 , nuclear deterrence has 05:06.510 --> 05:08.621 been a core part of NATO's collective 05:08.621 --> 05:10.899 defense and mutual security commitment . 05:10.899 --> 05:13.066 And as long as nuclear weapons exist , 05:13.066 --> 05:15.177 NATO will remain a nuclear alliance . 05:15.329 --> 05:17.385 In an increasingly uncertain world , 05:17.440 --> 05:19.162 nuclear deterrence remains the 05:19.162 --> 05:21.279 cornerstone of line security , and 05:21.279 --> 05:23.168 NATO's nuclear forces are a vital 05:23.168 --> 05:25.390 component of our overall deterrence and 05:25.390 --> 05:27.279 defense posture . The allies come 05:27.279 --> 05:29.446 together in the nuclear planning group 05:29.446 --> 05:32.079 to make consensus decisions . Over any 05:32.079 --> 05:33.968 and all aspects of NATO's nuclear 05:33.968 --> 05:36.079 forces , nothing is delegated down to 05:36.079 --> 05:38.301 the military . All decisions need to be 05:38.301 --> 05:40.357 made at a political level , and that 05:40.357 --> 05:42.579 again is by consensus how do the allies 05:42.579 --> 05:44.468 come together to consult on these 05:44.468 --> 05:46.579 issues to make decisions in peacetime 05:46.579 --> 05:49.220 or in crisis or conflict . This year 05:49.220 --> 05:51.331 NATO is once again holding its annual 05:51.331 --> 05:53.540 nuclear deterrent exercise Steadfast 05:53.540 --> 05:56.369 noon . This is a long planned event . 05:56.459 --> 05:59.140 It's a routine exercise not linked to 05:59.140 --> 06:01.196 any real world events , and it's not 06:01.196 --> 06:03.084 directed against any country . In 06:03.084 --> 06:04.640 Steadfast noon , allies are 06:04.640 --> 06:06.862 participating in a variety of different 06:06.862 --> 06:08.862 ways , providing different types of 06:08.862 --> 06:11.029 aircraft , some of which are certified 06:11.029 --> 06:12.918 for a nuclear mission and must be 06:12.918 --> 06:14.807 prepared to conduct it . But also 06:14.807 --> 06:16.696 supporting aircraft that are in a 06:16.696 --> 06:18.751 conventional role such as tankers or 06:18.751 --> 06:21.179 fighter escorts to be able to show how 06:21.179 --> 06:23.512 we can come together , be interoperable , 06:23.512 --> 06:25.735 be ready , and hence very effective and 06:25.735 --> 06:27.735 credible if we ever have to conduct 06:27.735 --> 06:29.568 this mission and allies can also 06:29.568 --> 06:31.623 provide their airspace , air bases , 06:31.623 --> 06:33.846 supporting personnel , really a visible 06:33.846 --> 06:35.957 expression of how we come together on 06:35.957 --> 06:38.170 nuclear deterrence . In an alliance of 06:38.170 --> 06:40.369 32 democratic nations , it's , it's 06:40.369 --> 06:42.147 important that we talk with our 06:42.147 --> 06:44.258 populations about how we're providing 06:44.258 --> 06:45.980 for their security and nuclear 06:45.980 --> 06:47.813 deterrence is the cornerstone of 06:47.813 --> 06:49.647 alliance security . This year in 06:49.647 --> 06:51.730 Steadfast noon we're being more open 06:51.730 --> 06:54.089 and transparent to show how the allies 06:54.089 --> 06:55.867 are coming together , providing 06:55.867 --> 06:57.922 different types of aircraft or other 06:57.922 --> 07:01.140 capabilities to . Be able to operate 07:01.140 --> 07:03.820 together effectively as one force to be 07:03.820 --> 07:05.542 able to support NATO's nuclear 07:05.542 --> 07:08.619 deterrence . This is about how we are 07:08.619 --> 07:10.730 reassuring our populations and we are 07:10.730 --> 07:12.897 taking prudent measures to provide for 07:12.897 --> 07:15.008 their security and also deterring any 07:15.008 --> 07:15.579 potential adversary .
