WEBVTT 00:00.829 --> 00:03.740 In regards to how unique is this for 00:03.740 --> 00:06.179 Red Cross and moving people from the 00:06.179 --> 00:08.649 areas that they're being evacuated from 00:08.649 --> 00:11.590 in Alaska to bringing them to Anchorage . 00:12.460 --> 00:15.500 This relief effort has been an amazing 00:15.500 --> 00:18.010 operation . The National Guard , as 00:18.010 --> 00:19.860 well as other state partners and 00:19.860 --> 00:22.193 nonprofits that are coming to the table , 00:22.193 --> 00:24.363 the villages are really remote . And 00:24.363 --> 00:26.642 they are spread across many , many 00:26.642 --> 00:29.113 miles and so it is not easy to get to 00:29.113 --> 00:31.335 them and it is not easy for them to get 00:31.335 --> 00:33.513 to us . And without those partnerships 00:33.882 --> 00:36.049 we really wouldn't have the ability to 00:36.049 --> 00:38.271 provide the support and get the support 00:38.271 --> 00:40.438 to the affected people as needed . And 00:40.438 --> 00:42.438 so the amazing partnership with the 00:42.438 --> 00:44.660 National Guard going out and being able 00:44.660 --> 00:46.882 to help evacuate people , there's a few 00:46.882 --> 00:48.826 other . organizations in the local 00:48.826 --> 00:51.305 communities that are out there trying 00:51.305 --> 00:53.361 to understand what the needs are and 00:53.361 --> 00:55.472 able to get folks out of the affected 00:55.472 --> 00:57.745 communities and without that team and 00:57.745 --> 00:59.745 that community aspect , it would be 00:59.745 --> 01:02.826 really tough to get resources out to 01:02.826 --> 01:05.706 the rural parts of Alaska and the folks 01:05.706 --> 01:08.585 that are in need of support at this 01:08.585 --> 01:12.410 time . As far as the 01:12.410 --> 01:14.529 Egan Center and the Alaska Center and 01:14.529 --> 01:16.585 how long those shelters will be open 01:16.585 --> 01:18.640 for , as I mentioned , we at the Red 01:18.640 --> 01:20.362 Cross have been here since the 01:20.362 --> 01:22.307 beginning , and we plan to be here 01:22.307 --> 01:24.473 through the recovery efforts as well . 01:24.610 --> 01:26.777 I can't speak to how long the shelters 01:26.777 --> 01:28.832 will be open for . It depends on how 01:28.832 --> 01:31.330 recovery goes , but at this time , the 01:31.330 --> 01:33.441 Egan Center and the Alaska Center are 01:33.441 --> 01:36.392 both shelters . That are open and able 01:36.392 --> 01:39.023 to support evacuees that are looking 01:39.023 --> 01:42.583 for a safe place to stay , as well as 01:42.583 --> 01:45.142 food to eat , water , hydration , and 01:45.142 --> 01:49.093 just a safe place to be . We 01:49.093 --> 01:51.703 are here until the need is no longer . 01:51.862 --> 01:53.695 There's conversations about what 01:53.695 --> 01:55.695 midterm and long-term sheltering is 01:55.695 --> 01:57.806 going to look like . We know that the 01:57.806 --> 01:59.862 recovery efforts are going to take a 01:59.862 --> 02:01.973 while because of the damages that are 02:01.973 --> 02:03.973 out there and so we're at the table 02:03.973 --> 02:05.918 with our state partners , National 02:05.918 --> 02:07.973 Guard and the tribal partners really 02:07.973 --> 02:10.140 figuring out what those next steps are 02:10.140 --> 02:12.251 going to be for folks . But right now 02:12.251 --> 02:14.251 the most important thing is getting 02:14.251 --> 02:16.418 folks into a safe space , which is the 02:16.418 --> 02:18.945 Egan Center and the Alaska Center . 02:21.479 --> 02:23.809 At this time we've got hundreds of 02:23.809 --> 02:25.865 folks that are coming in from across 02:25.865 --> 02:27.949 the country to help . We have been 02:27.949 --> 02:30.116 hearing that there could be up to 2000 02:30.116 --> 02:31.830 folks that may need help with 02:31.830 --> 02:34.910 sheltering . Folks are coming in from 02:34.910 --> 02:37.630 the National Guard and other areas into 02:37.630 --> 02:39.910 Anchorage , and we have shelters that 02:39.910 --> 02:42.289 are open at the Egan Center as well as 02:42.289 --> 02:45.509 the Alaska Center . We couldn't do this 02:45.509 --> 02:47.620 without the community . The community 02:47.620 --> 02:49.842 is such a crucial part of this , and so 02:49.842 --> 02:51.842 we are working very collaboratively 02:51.842 --> 02:54.009 with our partners on a federal level , 02:54.009 --> 02:56.176 a state level , a tribal level , and a 02:56.176 --> 02:58.342 community level . We've got government 02:58.342 --> 03:00.509 agencies , we've got nonprofits at the 03:00.509 --> 03:02.453 table . We have a lot of wonderful 03:02.453 --> 03:04.509 people trying to help those that are 03:04.509 --> 03:08.460 affected . We know that people are 03:08.460 --> 03:10.571 trying to connect with loved ones and 03:10.571 --> 03:12.820 so we do have a reunification site set 03:12.820 --> 03:15.490 up if anybody is looking or trying to 03:15.490 --> 03:17.539 find loved ones . If you go to 03:17.539 --> 03:21.460 redcross.org/ get help , there is a 03:21.460 --> 03:23.238 variety of information there on 03:23.238 --> 03:25.293 connecting with loved ones and other 03:25.293 --> 03:27.516 services that are available through the 03:27.516 --> 03:29.404 Red Cross . We appreciate all the 03:29.404 --> 03:31.404 collaboration and everything that's 03:31.404 --> 03:33.610 been all of the collaboration that we 03:33.610 --> 03:35.610 have had with all of our government 03:35.610 --> 03:37.721 partners and the nonprofits that have 03:37.721 --> 03:39.721 been coming to the table to support 03:39.721 --> 03:41.777 those that are affected . It takes a 03:41.777 --> 03:43.999 village and we mean that in every way , 03:43.999 --> 03:46.110 and we appreciate being able to be at 03:46.110 --> 03:50.029 the table . So as far as where 03:50.029 --> 03:52.470 are people going once they come in from 03:52.470 --> 03:54.637 other parts of the country , they will 03:54.637 --> 03:56.748 land in Anchorage and then from there 03:56.748 --> 03:59.080 what we'll do is some will go to Bethel 03:59.080 --> 04:00.669 and then we're hoping to do 04:00.669 --> 04:02.836 distribution of emergency supplies out 04:02.836 --> 04:05.869 in the affected villages and during 04:05.869 --> 04:08.036 that . Process folks will actually get 04:08.036 --> 04:10.690 out to all the affected villages when 04:10.690 --> 04:12.912 they are out . Some folks are coming in 04:12.912 --> 04:14.801 to do sheltering . Some folks are 04:14.801 --> 04:16.857 coming in to do feeding . Some folks 04:16.857 --> 04:18.857 are coming in to do distribution of 04:18.857 --> 04:20.857 emergency supplies and a variety of 04:20.857 --> 04:22.968 other things , and so we're hoping to 04:22.968 --> 04:25.023 get out into as many of the affected 04:25.023 --> 04:27.700 areas as possible . If folks are 04:27.700 --> 04:29.922 interested in donating or interested in 04:29.922 --> 04:32.390 learning ways that they can support an 04:32.390 --> 04:34.750 effort like this , we at Red Cross are 04:34.750 --> 04:37.859 always looking for volunteers . We love 04:37.859 --> 04:39.989 and love folks to come in and support 04:39.989 --> 04:41.989 us from the local community if they 04:41.989 --> 04:43.767 want to support . You can go to 04:43.767 --> 04:45.933 redcross.org to learn more about those 04:45.933 --> 04:47.989 opportunities for . Volunteering and 04:47.989 --> 04:50.334 then as far as goods and supplies go , 04:50.545 --> 04:52.712 I know that VOAD is coordinating a lot 04:52.712 --> 04:54.823 of those relief efforts in regards to 04:54.823 --> 04:56.712 what the specific communities are 04:56.712 --> 04:58.823 asking for and at this time , most of 04:58.823 --> 05:00.434 what we are hearing is basic 05:00.434 --> 05:02.656 necessities such as food , water , um , 05:02.984 --> 05:05.151 some medical supplies and things along 05:05.151 --> 05:06.651 those lines at this time . 05:08.809 --> 05:10.920 In regards to the question about what 05:11.589 --> 05:13.790 what makes this unique or more unique 05:13.790 --> 05:16.130 than other responses , definitely the 05:16.130 --> 05:18.186 remoteness , as I mentioned before , 05:18.186 --> 05:22.140 but also just the vast amount of miles 05:22.140 --> 05:25.190 between the affected villages and . The 05:25.190 --> 05:27.309 amount of space that the storm has 05:27.309 --> 05:29.365 affected , so I don't know the exact 05:29.365 --> 05:31.698 number of miles that have been affected , 05:31.698 --> 05:35.269 but so much of the coastal of Alaska 05:35.269 --> 05:37.559 has been affected and so many villages 05:37.559 --> 05:40.170 have been affected that . As I 05:40.170 --> 05:42.429 mentioned , are remote but also are not 05:42.429 --> 05:45.290 easy to get to and so you can't just 05:45.290 --> 05:47.489 drive a car to them . You can't just 05:47.489 --> 05:49.600 drive a boat to them . It takes a lot 05:49.600 --> 05:51.822 more effort to be able to get resources 05:51.822 --> 05:53.933 and supplies to them because they are 05:53.933 --> 05:56.156 so remote , and I think that that makes 05:56.156 --> 05:58.320 this much more challenging as well .
