WEBVTT 00:00.829 --> 00:04.579 On the 11th of 00:04.579 --> 00:08.460 October we had personnel deployed to 00:08.460 --> 00:11.579 Katie , Nome , and Bethel in 00:11.579 --> 00:14.020 preparation for the remnants of Typhoon 00:14.020 --> 00:16.329 Halo to come ashore . 00:17.969 --> 00:19.959 Right now we are currently under 00:20.139 --> 00:23.860 voluntary evacuations , and those 00:23.860 --> 00:26.290 evacuations are taking place from the 00:26.290 --> 00:28.920 Alaska Army and Air National Guard . 00:29.899 --> 00:32.509 Those flights are helicopters from the 00:32.509 --> 00:35.650 villages going to Beth 00:37.689 --> 00:39.745 and they're staying at the Armory at 00:39.745 --> 00:43.090 the Alaska Army Armory there in Bethel . 00:43.709 --> 00:45.765 Right now we have been focusing on a 00:45.765 --> 00:47.876 couple of the hardest hit communities 00:48.099 --> 00:51.860 as this progresses , we are starting to 00:51.860 --> 00:53.916 expand out because we know there are 00:53.916 --> 00:57.209 other communities with damage . Our 00:57.209 --> 01:00.819 first shelter here in Anchorage . took 01:00.819 --> 01:04.260 the first set of displaced Alaskans 01:04.260 --> 01:07.620 yesterday that were brought to 01:07.620 --> 01:11.139 Anchorage from a C-17 from the Alaska 01:11.139 --> 01:14.099 National Guard . The second shelter we 01:14.099 --> 01:17.459 are setting up is actually currently 01:17.459 --> 01:20.580 taking displaced Alaskans from the 2nd 01:20.580 --> 01:23.769 C-17 flight that happened earlier today . 01:24.459 --> 01:27.379 We have a 3rd flight coming in later 01:27.379 --> 01:30.430 this evening , and we are expecting 01:31.580 --> 01:34.540 another C-17 flight tomorrow and 01:34.540 --> 01:37.930 another one on Saturday . The shelters 01:37.930 --> 01:40.540 are being run by the Red Cross . They 01:40.540 --> 01:43.550 are using the volunteer organizations 01:43.550 --> 01:45.661 that are active in the disaster , the 01:45.661 --> 01:47.772 Alaska VOAD , which is made up of the 01:47.772 --> 01:49.519 Red Cross , Salvation Army , 01:49.830 --> 01:52.260 Samaritan's Purse , and the World's 01:52.260 --> 01:54.709 Central Kitchen , among other 01:54.709 --> 01:57.620 organizations . We are working together 01:57.620 --> 02:00.309 with the National Guard , Alaska State 02:00.309 --> 02:03.870 Troopers . Volunteer organizations , 02:04.110 --> 02:06.629 churches , and the community of 02:06.629 --> 02:10.220 Anchorage . This has been a historic 02:10.220 --> 02:13.750 event and is the largest evacuation and 02:13.750 --> 02:16.809 sheltering in the state of Alaska in 02:16.809 --> 02:17.809 recent memory . 02:21.429 --> 02:23.373 As you can imagine , trying to put 02:23.373 --> 02:25.710 teams into those communities is really 02:25.710 --> 02:28.149 hard , and you don't , as you're 02:28.149 --> 02:30.260 responding to those communities , you 02:30.260 --> 02:34.220 don't want to . Displace those people 02:34.220 --> 02:36.498 already going through a horrific event . 02:36.498 --> 02:39.309 So we are pushing pushing out of Bethel 02:39.309 --> 02:41.198 with those teams going into those 02:41.198 --> 02:43.789 communities with the great help and 02:43.789 --> 02:46.011 support of the Air National Guard . One 02:46.011 --> 02:48.294 of the greatest things . That helps us 02:48.294 --> 02:52.154 in Alaska that is pretty rare is we are 02:52.154 --> 02:54.395 stationed with the National Guard here 02:54.395 --> 02:57.675 on J Bear , so we literally look across 02:57.675 --> 03:00.235 at each other and are able to discuss 03:00.235 --> 03:02.235 what needs to happen and be able to 03:02.235 --> 03:03.235 work together . 03:06.380 --> 03:08.547 The sheltering aspect of the Red Cross 03:08.547 --> 03:10.990 is actually also on a historic level . 03:11.080 --> 03:13.479 We are getting national teams that have 03:13.479 --> 03:15.779 responded to the Lahaina fires , 03:16.360 --> 03:18.527 currently the Los Angeles fires , they 03:18.527 --> 03:20.749 were there . That same team is actually 03:20.749 --> 03:23.360 here in Alaska right now . Starting to 03:23.360 --> 03:26.720 work those shelters . The University of 03:26.720 --> 03:29.960 Alaska Anchorage was able to open up 03:29.960 --> 03:33.320 the Alaska Airlines Center at the last 03:33.320 --> 03:37.089 minute then to get the first set of 03:37.759 --> 03:41.630 evacuees in . We're moving to 03:41.630 --> 03:44.300 the Egan because they have more space 03:45.190 --> 03:47.412 knowing that as these flights come in , 03:47.710 --> 03:49.766 we're going to have different family 03:49.766 --> 03:51.932 members on different flights , and our 03:51.932 --> 03:54.154 whole goal is to reunite those families 03:54.154 --> 03:56.789 in one space . It also allows us to 03:56.789 --> 03:59.270 work with our partners from the Red 03:59.270 --> 04:01.492 Cross and the Health Department , ANTHC 04:04.029 --> 04:06.362 and all of those that we have a central . 04:06.414 --> 04:08.615 that we can provide medical , mental 04:08.615 --> 04:12.154 health , individual assistance to get 04:12.154 --> 04:14.934 them into places because this is going 04:14.934 --> 04:18.375 to be a long term event . uh , winter 04:18.375 --> 04:21.614 is coming pretty fast . How do we 04:21.614 --> 04:24.964 shelter them and be respectful of them 04:24.964 --> 04:27.964 and their communities and their culture 04:29.084 --> 04:31.251 for the long term till we get to where 04:31.251 --> 04:32.862 we can rebuild their homes . 04:35.000 --> 04:37.760 I also want to mention that Anchorage 04:37.760 --> 04:39.704 School District has been huge with 04:39.704 --> 04:41.871 providing buses , emergency supplies , 04:42.160 --> 04:44.327 and they are working a plan to be able 04:44.327 --> 04:47.119 to have the kids still stay in their 04:47.119 --> 04:50.290 regular classes and still go to school . 04:50.440 --> 04:53.100 So that's been a huge partner that has 04:53.100 --> 04:55.609 really stood out to us at the SEOC . 04:58.010 --> 05:00.121 There are a lot of moving parts and a 05:00.121 --> 05:02.288 lot of organizations that are involved 05:02.288 --> 05:04.910 in this . Every morning there is an 05:04.910 --> 05:08.429 operations brief in the SCOC . 05:09.839 --> 05:12.006 Every liaison from all these different 05:12.006 --> 05:14.239 departments has a seat in that SEOC . 05:14.359 --> 05:16.730 So when we are doing our ops briefings , 05:17.399 --> 05:19.455 everybody's there , so everybody can 05:19.455 --> 05:21.621 brief out and say what challenges they 05:21.621 --> 05:23.788 have , what operations they're looking 05:23.788 --> 05:26.010 to do in that day , and we can actually 05:26.010 --> 05:27.899 have that discussion where we can 05:27.899 --> 05:29.677 prioritize responsibilities and 05:29.677 --> 05:31.399 priorities , and we don't have 05:31.399 --> 05:31.920 offshoots .
