For Airmen looking for an opportunity outside of their current Air Force Specialty Code, openings within the Military Training Instructor career field may be the career-broadening opportunity they are looking for.
Three members from Lackland’s 433rd Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland (JBSA-Lackland), Texas visited Niagara during the November 4th and 5th Unit Training Assembly to meet with base leadership and Reserve Citizen Airmen to discuss opportunities and benefits of becoming an MTI. One of the advantages—the MTI contract is for a special duty tour.
Lt. Col. Chris Victoria, 433rd Training Squadron Commander, understands the unique challenges he faces as he attempts to recruit each wing’s best and brightest. To base leadership, he reiterates that by being a special duty tour of between three and four years, it benefits the member, the 433rd, and the member’s home base.
“I can understand, people don’t want to cough up their shiny pennies,” said Victoria. "Why would they send me their best NCOs? When my folks come out they’ve been responsible for the last three or four years of the care, the feeding, the training, of 50-60 individuals every 7 ½ weeks.”
These skills make members more attractive to their home stations as they would bring flexibility, resiliency and other skills necessary in the operational force at the supervisory level.
Victoria and his team currently have AGR, TR, and ART positions available for hire. He encourages any who is interested in becoming an MTI to visit JBSA-Lackland to shadow to see what a day in the life of a Military Training Instructor is really like.
