Yeon-tan Warms Songtan
Defense Media Activity - Pacific
Jan. 24, 2014 | 1:07
The holiday season has come and gone, but these volunteers are delivering the most precious of gifts to elderly members of the Songtan community. They are delivering yeon-tan, which are Korean coals used to heat their homes, they’re also used for cooking fires. The gift of coal doesn’t exactly have a positive connotation in American culture, but in this case, its how low-income households stay warm during the unforgiving winter season.
SUGGESTED LEAD:
A lump of coal at Christmas means you may not have been good this year, but for some people, it’s a blessing. Senior Airman Corey Schuler shares a little perspective in Songtan (sung-tahn), South Korea, where volunteers are making a difference, one lump of coal at a time.
SUGGESTED TAG:
The volunteers raised money for the coal through a series of fundraisers. Includes sound bites from Tech. Sgt. Adam Fields, Event Coordinator. Also available in high definition.
