NATO partners and allies from the French 3e regiment d’infanterie de marine,
Danish Jutland Dragoon Regiment, Norwegian Cavalry Squadron Sniper Platoon,
British 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment Sniper Platoon, and German 3rd
Company Panzergrenadierlehrbataillon conduct a long range sniper training
exercise in the mountains of Rena, Norway on October 25, 2018.
During the training the soldiers were able to test one another’s weapons,
demonstrate processes procedure, practice safe handling of ammunitions and
arms. All members of the training join together as part of the larger
encompassing Very High Readiness Joint Task Force.
Norwegian Private 1st Class Tobias, Cavalry Squadron Sniper Platoon: “What I’ve
learned today from the other NATO countries here is that we do things a little bit
differently but there are also a lot of similarities. Therefore, it’s easy to cooperate
and easy to talk to each other and exchange what you know.”

and you have to be able to look at all the details to do everything perfectly.”

“What I’ve learned today from the other NATO countries here is that we do

“One of the many challenges of being a sniper in Norway is there is a lot of
variety in what type of nature there is. It could be mountains, forests, pinewoods
or normal leaf woods, and in the winter of course it is cold and therefore you give
a big thermal signature.”

“So I’m Sergeant Cedric, I am from the 3e regiment d’infanterie de marine in
France, I am a sniper and a squadron leader.”

“For me the 3 qualities required are being rustic, tough and really patient.”

“Why rustic? Because we can participate to operations where temperature is
extremely cold, or temperatures reaching beyond 60 degrees. Then we need to
be tough because we carry a lot of weight, our bags average 60-70 kgs with our
weapon. Then really patient, because when we are on a position, we might have
to wait between 1 hour to a week on the same position.”

“For me, this experience has been really helpful for me and my team as French
snipers, we exchanged a lot, from weapons to equipment, shooting methods and
also infiltration and extraction training.”

“During Trident Juncture, since we are in Norway, we have to deal with the cold
weather. For a sniper, cold weather requires to be more careful when shooting.
It can affect the shooting a lot. Also, when we are infiltrating, we need to make
sure we conserve energy and stay warm once we are in position.”
