JOINT-BASE SAN ANTONIO-Randolph, Texas – Janis El Shabazz, 340th Flying Training Group public affairs specialist, was named the June On-the-Spot Award winner by Col. Allen Duckworth, group commander.

The commander implemented the award to provide immediate and visible recognition for the contributions of exceptional civilian and enlisted headquarters members as those contributions occur. Nominations are submitted through the group Senior Enlisted Council.  In recognition of their excellent performance, award winners are granted the commander’s parking spot for a week.

El Shabazz, hired in 2016, stood up the group’s public affairs function, implementing a host of programs designed to educate and inform Airmen. Developing a mutually supportive relationship with Air Education and Training Command teams at seven installations enabled her to highlight group Airmen at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph and JBSA-Lackland, as well as squadrons at Laughlin AFB and Sheppard AFB, Texas; Columbus AFB, Mississippi; Vance AFB, Oklahoma, and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.

According to Duckworth, the Senior Enlisted Council nominated El Shabazz because she consistently showcases the 340th FTG, highlighting its exceptional Reserve Citizen Airmen and its complex mission, and has had a measurable impact on educating the Air Force and Department of Defense.

“It’s great to have a unanimous decision by the Senior Enlisted Council, and an excellent choice, as well,” said Duckworth.
