HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov. 11 commemorates the end of World War I, ceremoniously declared on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill officially establishing the day as Veterans Day.
President Eisenhower said Veterans Day will "Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom.”
This holiday gives us a special opportunity to reflect upon the tremendous dedication, and in many cases, the ultimate sacrifice of those who served our nation so courageously in the past. It also gives us a chance to recognize the commitment and leadership of those serving in our military today.
This day, as we honor our nation’s veterans of all wars, past and present, let us take the time to recognize and show gratitude to all who have served our country. Let us celebrate their patriotism, love of country, and passion for selfless service. Let us reflect on the significance that their sacrifices have had to safeguarding our way of life. Finally, let us dedicate ourselves to protecting the freedoms we enjoy in continuing to build upon the efforts of all who have served. Our nation is depending on us.
I wish you all a safe, enjoyable holiday. I'm proud to serve with you, and I thank you for your commitment to Team Hill, our Air Force, and the United States of America.
